Macquarie “Excellent” in gender equity review

Macquarie University’s commitment to retaining the talent and expertise of women at all levels of health and medical research has been reviewed as “Excellent”.

The finding has come from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australia’s leading expert body promoting the development and maintenance of public and individual health standards.

The Council requires associated institutions to report each year on their compliance with its funding agreement and other relevant policies.

This includes a commitment to gender equity policies designed to retain and progress women in their health and medical research careers.

In addressing the issue, institutions are required to address seven requirements:

  1. An institutional strategy that addresses the underrepresentation of women in senior positons in relevant strategic/corporate plans. This strategy should be reviewed frequently to ensure that it is effective and relevant
  2. Mentoring and skills training strategies that promote and seek to increase women’s participation
  3. The provision of parental/maternity leave and carers leave, as well as transitional support to encourage return to work
  4. Working arrangements that cater for individuals with caring responsibilities
  5. Remuneration equity between men and women with the same responsibilities
  6. Employment strategies that encourage the recruitment, retention and progression of women in health and medical research
  7. Strategies to address the need for the provision of support for childcare.

Importantly, Macquarie met all seven requirements, with the University’s gender equity commitment assessed as “Excellent”.

Macquarie’s Human Resources Director, Nicole Gower, welcomes the results.

“I am delighted to see the NHMRC acknowledging our achievement in gender equity,” Nicole says.

“While we continue to lead the sector in this area, there is a long road ahead to achieving equity in the workplace.”

“The fact that national funding bodies are recognising the importance of gender equity is a good step in the right direction and supports the important work being done to progress our Gender Equity Strategy.”
