Macquarie Ally Network – invitation to train

Macquarie University aims to provide a diverse and inclusive campus where staff and students can work and study safely, free of harassment or discrimination.

As part of this commitment, the University offers services and support for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ).

Macquarie Ally Network

The Ally Network is a group of staff and students who are committed to creating an inclusive  and respectful culture at Macquarie University for LGBTIQ community members.

They are not experts about matters of sexuality and gender identity and may or may not be from the LGBTIQ community.

Rather, they are members of staff or students who are trained to be:

  • aware of issues faced by members of the LGBTIQ community
  • a contact point on campus for anyone interested in or affected by issues involving sexuality or gender identity
  • agents of change who challenge homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism.

Department of Modern History Associate Professor, Dr Shirleene Robinson has been an Ally since 2015.

“Being an Ally has been an enriching experience for me and is a great way of reflecting the Macquarie University values of respect for diversity and equality,” the Vice-Chancellor’s Innovation Fellow says.

“I feel that it is important for students and members of our community who identify as LGBTIQ to see that there is support for them and that the University provides an inclusive and welcoming environment.”

Ally training

Ally training is open to all at Macquarie who are interested in creating an inclusive culture for LGBTIQ staff and students.

The training involves a three-hour professional development workshop to increase knowledge, understanding and awareness of diversity of gender expression, issues affecting LGBTIQ staff and students, LGBTIQ-related support at Macquarie and the role of an Ally in fostering an inclusive community.
