Spotlight on… The Global Leadership Program

Spotlight on is our way to showcase a team, faculty or department at Macquarie. This Week, we feature the Global Leadership Program (GLP). The GLP recently claimed one of four Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education. This is the first time a university in the Southern Hemisphere has received the prestigious award, and recognises the value that GLP provides to graduates and global community.

But who are GLP? We sat down with Chloë Spackman, Clare Bartram, Alisha Filmer, Jeanette Nkrumah, Emily Anvia, Caroline Reid and Anneke Rowe Courtemanche to find out.

What do you do?

We provide every enrolled Macquarie student with the opportunity to participate in a free extracurricular program to build their leadership capability, cross-cultural competency, knowledge on global issues, and sense of global citizenship and community responsibility.

This program covers many topics, including gender economics and social entrepreneurship, and includes an experiential component such as volunteering, studying abroad or learning a new language. It also delivers a series of on-campus keynote speaker events with global leaders and diplomatic speakers who expose students to diverse perspectives and innovative ideas.

We currently have over 3600 enrolled students across more than 200 disciplines and undergraduate, postgraduate and study abroad/exchange cohorts.

We also facilitate the early engagement of Year 12 students through the Global Leadership Entry Program (GLEP) initiative; a pathway for Year 12 students in to a selection of Macquarie courses pre-ATAR. In 2016, GLEP’s third year of operation, a record amount of offers (up 53% from 2015) were given to students through the initiative.

Why do you do it?

We assist students to become responsible global citizens in their personal and professional lives, which is a critical part of every students’ learning experience at Macquarie.

Students need a cross-disciplinary approach, a deep understanding of the major issues on national and international agendas, and they need to be cross-culturally competent.

Who do you most frequently work with?

Students are our key focus, and all GLP staff are student advisors with three staff members dedicated to assisting GLP students from each faculty.

However, to successfully deliver the program we collaborate with many stakeholders across the University including PACE, Macquarie International, Careers and Sustainability. We also work with external stakeholders such as libraries, local councils and NGO’s.

What’s planned for the future?

We’re working with many parts of the University to make the GLP more sustainable and adaptable to individual student needs without compromising on quality and meaning for the student experience.

We have also started planning this year’s International Symposium trip to China we are hoping to run in September. Our International Symposia canvass the social, political, economic and cultural agendas and trends of the cities and countries we visit through a range of University, business and NGO briefings and participation in cultural activities, so any contacts, ideas or expertise from across the University would be most welcome!

How do you engage with us? Where can you learn more?

We are keen to meet up with people for coffee and a chat, and we love to be invited to make presentations on GLP anywhere on or off campus. So please get in touch! You can contact us at glp@mq.edu.au / 9850 6761. Check out our students’ blogs or get more context on the MQ website.
