They will also observe teaching sessions when session 2 begins.

Gala raises funds for MND

Supporters from Macquarie and the community came together for the Motor Neurone Disease Gala Fundraiser on 22 June at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth. Thanks to the generosity shown at the event, as well as other fundraising this year, more than $300,000 has been raised so far in 2016 to continue the fight against MND. The Motor Neurone Disease Service and Research Centre at Macquarie University manages the care of 10 per cent of all MND patients in Australia.

Junior scientists get hands-on in the holidays

308 curious young minds were on campus during the July school holidays for the Junior Science Academy program. The program offers a range of fun, hands-on courses that teach content through modelling, investigations, teamwork and problem solving.

Many Macquarie staff were involved in delivering the program:

  • The Faculty of Science, providing classrooms and equipment.
  • Four undergraduate teaching students in the School of Education, who gained professional experience in a team-teaching classroom alongside experienced teachers.
  • Ken Sheedy and staff in the Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies, who hosted children in The Science of Ancient Greece course.
  • Joanne Jamie and National Indigenous Science Education Program students, who held three Chemistry magic shows for participants.

Junior Science Academy offers courses during each school holiday period.

Career Accelerator Program prepares students for future employment

Nearly 40 high achieving undergraduate students from a range of disciplines and degree stages recently participated in the third annual Career Accelerator Program (CAP). CAP provides students with inside, real-world knowledge and the opportunity to impress potential employers through career development workshops held in the workplace. This year’s employer participants include Macquarie Group, PwC, EY, AMP, Commonwealth Bank and Group M. Workshops covered topics such as personal branding, interviewing techniques, ‘tribal types’ for communication and presentation skills. The Career and Employment Service facilitated the program, liaising with the employers and also recruiting students through a competitive online video interview process. Learn more about CAP.

New art exhibition is well received

The Wilmotte Williams exhibition, currently on display in the Macquarie University Library, was launched earlier this month at a well-attended event.  Christopher Williams, the artist’s son, spoke at length about his mother’s art as well as relating the story of his mother’s “lost” painting, the search for it, and its discovery – a story covered in previous editions of This Week At Macquarie University. After a media callout about the “lost” painting, the Gallery was flooded with individuals offering their Williams painting for inclusion in the exhibition. Christopher was exceptionally grateful to the Macquarie University Art Gallery for its assistance in the search for the painting and the curation of the exhibition in the University Library.
